Up Next....My All-Time Favorite Album!

Up this week we're looking at the 1970 folk classic 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' by Simon and Garfunkel. It topped charts, won Grammy’s and influenced millions. But why does it out-rank the likes of Doolittle, Exile on main St. and The Bends to be my favourite album of all time?

Well, to put it simply...it was the first one I ever heard.

My dad is not a massive music listener...in fact nobody in my family is. He had a very skimpy record collection mainly of classical releases and the odd, very dodge 70s pop. But one of them stood out to me; Bridge Over Troubled Water. The reason was that the back of the LP had all the lyrics, which meant that I could sing all the songs with ease. I literally spent hours playing it over and over again. I know every lyric, every chord change and every harmony like the back of my hand.

I now have my dad's copy of the record framed and on my wall at home (pic to follow) and have replaced his with another second hand copy (not that he'll ever listen to it).

I went to see them live in the summer of 2003 in the RDS (the same summer I saw the Pixies live for the first time). And they were brilliant. I’m really looking forward to this show now.

Up this week we're looking at Beastie Boys - Ill Communication as they are playing two sets at the weekends Electic Picnic. As a long time fan who still hasn't seent them live, I'm really looking forward to this gig!

If you want to get yourself in the mood before the weekend, I can't recommend enough their latest DVD Dude, I Fuckin Shot That.....one of the best concert DVDs around and well worth the beans! So tune in next Sunday at 9pm for the Album Archive on Phantom.

It's now been 20 years since the release of Appetite for Destruction. Like myself, many people grew up with this album and the roller coaster ride that was Guns n' Roses back in the late 80's and early 90's. Anyone have any interesting memories of the album and the times?

This was the original artwork for the album as inspired by Robert Williams. It had to be replaced by the more familiar one (above right) as MTV refused to play their videos until it was gone. It didn't goo far however, it ended up on the inside artwork!

A special show this week as we look at the life of Jackson C. Frank and his self titled release from 1965. It was to be his first and only release as his deeply troubled youth would evolve into an even more troubled future.
His album is regarded as the most forgotten classics of the last century and it would later go on to inspire the likes of Simon and Garfunkle and Nick Drake. But what happened to him in his childhood that brought out such a beautiful album and indeed what happened to him in later life? Well this Sunday between 9 and 10pm on Phantom 105.2's album archive we're going to tell you his story.

Tragedy Hits Dublin Leg of the Tour

Dublin-The Point Theatre, May 11,1996, 9:30 pm. 7000 fans filled the floor at The Smashing Pumpkins hit the stage. 110 security guards scrambled behind the barricades to control the flow of the mosh pits as they formed as the Pumpkins began toplay. A few minutes into the show Billy Corgan could feel that something was wrong. Hetold the crowd to take a step back. At 10 pm, Billy said that they would stop the show ifthey didn'tstop moshing. For Bernadette O'Brien, a 17 year high school student, it was already too late. O'Brien, who was near the front of the stage with a friend and two cousins crushed by the overpowering crowd. When informed of the girl's injuries, Corgantold the crowd, "I'm sorry we can't play on. The gig's over. There's a girl out there who'snearly dying. We as human beings cannot play up here while people are getting seriously hurt down there. "The following day, Bernadette was taken off life-support at MaterHospital in Dublin. It was announced that she died from massive internal injuries. ThePumpkins sent flowers to her funeral and released a statement extending their condolencesto Bernadette O'Briens family and friends.

His Last Performance

"I was at the last show he played at Barristers in Memphis on May 26, 1997. There were probably about 50 or 60 people there. He was wearing a grey dress suit with a tie. He went behind the bar and we couldn't see what he was doing. Then a couple of songs into the set he said: "there's some red wine over at the bar". He'd been pouring the wine into little plastic cups for the audience.He played a couple of things from "Grace": Corpus Christi, which he hadn't played for a long time, "The Sky is a Landfill" and "Your flesh is so nice". he did a pretty weird, aggressive version of Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein". It wasn't the usual joking Jeff, it was more intense than that. So wheather it's strange plastic teddy bears (which stongly resemble the robots in Itchy and Scratchy World or be it the Sid vicious action figure, it's all there.

The Album Archive is moving time!

From now on we'll be on air on Sunday nights at 9pm in the Two Pete's old slot as they head off into the sunset, hand in hand, for a summer hiatus. There will also be a regular repeat on Sunday mornings between 8 and 9am, which means Bjork will get a second airing next Sunday morning if you missed it last weekend.

This should make the show a bit more accessible as Saturday nights can be a bit tricky for some people to tune in, what with boozing, dancing and the like!

This blog has been set up to work beside my show on Phantom 105.2, Dublin's alternative rock station. The Album Archive goes out every Saturday night at 9pm on Phantom and each week we feature a different album and give you the history of the making, release and success of the record. We'll also try and feature as much new music associated with the album as possible, such as out-takes, b-sides and live records of some of the tracks.

On this blog I intend to stick up some of the info which we can't fit into the show such as video's, letters, extra tracks etc etc. It will also give you a good idea of what to expect on the upcoming shows and let you know what went on in previous weeks.
