Some Music

Here's some mp3's to wet your appetite for the weekends show:

The Boy With A Thorn in His Side (Smiths cover)

Wonderful version of Nina Simone's Be Your Husband

Live version of Lover, You Should've Come Over

Hallelujah

<- Bar far the stangest piece of fan art work I've found so far!

"Whoever listens carefully to "Hallelujah" will discover that it is a song about sex, about love, about life on earth. The hallelujah is not a homage to a worshipped person, idol or god, but the hallelujah of the orgasm. It's an ode to life and love."
-- Jeff Buckley

The Extra Track; the 'Grace Scandal'

The second release of the album featuring the last track 'Forget Her' which Buckley fought not to have included on the album. This version was released after his death.

10 Years ago today......

Ten years ago today (May 29, 1997) Jeff Buckley decided to go for a swim in the Wolf River, laid on his back and began floating while he sang "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin. Quickly, stealthily, and tragically the currents sucked him in and pulled him under.

"So I wait for you
And I burn
Will I ever see your
sweet return?

Oh, will I ever learn?"

His Last Performance

"I was at the last show he played at Barristers in Memphis on May 26, 1997. There were probably about 50 or 60 people there. He was wearing a grey dress suit with a tie. He went behind the bar and we couldn't see what he was doing. Then a couple of songs into the set he said: "there's some red wine over at the bar". He'd been pouring the wine into little plastic cups for the audience. He played a couple of things from "Grace": Corpus Christi, which he hadn't played for a long time, "The Sky is a Landfill" and "Your flesh is so nice". he did a pretty weird, aggressive version of Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein". It wasn't the usual joking Jeff, it was more intense than that. He had a heavy interaction going on during "Frankenstein" with this one girl who was standing on the side of the stage with her boyfriend. After the show, he copied this long text on to the first page of a Bible this guy gave him to sign". - Gayle Kelemen 1998

You can buy anything. And punk is anything but the exception! Not only did the Sex Pistols launch a new era in music....but they were also a brand that many peopel still cash in on.

So wheather it's strange plastic teddy bears (which stongly resemble the robots in Itchy and Scratchy World or be it the Sid vicious action figure, it's all there.

You can even buy baby clothes to start them off on the right track! It really makes you wonder...

Coming Up This Week....

This week it's the turn of the Sex Pistols. May 27th 1977 saw the release of the single God Save The Queen, and the world was changed forever for so many people and indeed for popular music.

Here's the limited edition poster that was released with the album.

Big News!

The Album Archive is moving time!

From now on we'll be on air on Sunday nights at 9pm in the Two Pete's old slot as they head off into the sunset, hand in hand, for a summer hiatus. There will also be a regular repeat on Sunday mornings between 8 and 9am, which means Bjork will get a second airing next Sunday morning if you missed it last weekend.

This should make the show a bit more accessible as Saturday nights can be a bit tricky for some people to tune in, what with boozing, dancing and the like!

As you can see -> we're looking at the Sex Pistols this weekend coming to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of the single God Save The Queen

Human behaviour Video Storyboard

Directed by Michel Gondry (1993)

Venus As A Boy

"I think I wrote it in my living room in Iceland and sang it into my dictaphone. Later, by accident, we were going through sounds and I found this broken bottle sound. It wasn't intentional but it sounded great."

Anchor Song Live

In her own words......

"I've got a lot of courage, but I've also got a lot of fear. You should allow yourself to be scared. It's one of the prime emotions. You might almost enjoy it, funny as it sounds, and find that you can get over it and deal with it. If you ignore these things, you miss so much."

This week we're looking at this lady....

From 1993, it's Björk with Debut

So tune in this Saturday at 9pm.

Welcome to the Blog!

This blog has been set up to work beside my show on Phantom 105.2, Dublin's alternative rock station. The Album Archive goes out every Saturday night at 9pm on Phantom and each week we feature a different album and give you the history of the making, release and success of the record. We'll also try and feature as much new music associated with the album as possible, such as out-takes, b-sides and live records of some of the tracks.

On this blog I intend to stick up some of the info which we can't fit into the show such as video's, letters, extra tracks etc etc. It will also give you a good idea of what to expect on the upcoming shows and let you know what went on in previous weeks.

For a full list of all albums already covered on the Album Archive go to the phantom site. Here you can also make suggestions for out hit list of albums which we're planning on covering over the next few months!

- Derek

Note: see above post, but Album Archive has now been moved to Sunday nights at 9pm.
